2001.12.6 第10回Movie:The MAN WHO CRIED
STORY：1927年、ロシアの貧しい村。幼い少女、フィゲレは父親と祖母と暮らしていたが、娘によく 子守唄を歌ってくれたやさしい父親は、よりよい暮らしを求めてアメリカにわたる。いつか娘を呼 び寄せると言い残して。やがてフィゲレは父親を求めてアメリカを目指して船に乗るが、着いた先は イギリス。イギリス人の家庭に引き取られ、スージーと呼ばれるようになった彼女は成長し、歌手と してパリに渡る。そこで彼女は、ロシア人のダンサーのローラや、イタリア人のオペラ歌手ダンテ、 ハンサムなジプシーの青年、チェーザーなどと知り合う。そのころナチスがフランスに侵入し、 ユダヤ系のスージーに危機が迫ってきた、、、。

[Int. Day. Lola, who is from Russia, visits Sulie's bed-sit in Paris for the first time.]
Lola: So you live all by yourself, you poor little duck. Oh, this is, you know, not too bad. There's plenty of room. In Moscow there would be three families in here.
(Suzie places money in a jar on a shelf)
Lola: What are you doing?
Suzie: I'm saving.
Lola: What for?
Suzie: To go to America.
Lola: Suzie, you take my advise. Buy yourself a nice dress, and you will find a rich man who will take you there. Hmm?
[Int. Suzie's bed-sit. Night. Suzie shows a photo to Lola.]
Suzie: This is my father.
Lola: That's your father, yes. (Reading a writing on the photo) Abramovitch. But this is in Russian. Why didn't you tell me before?
(Lola speaks to Suzie in Russian.)
Lola: Suzie? You don't understand Russian?
(Suzie shakes her head, "No.")
Lola: Abramovitch. Ah...so...he was a jew.
[Int. Theater. Night. Dante, the lead opera singer from Italy, speaks to Casar, one for the gypsy performers in the opera.]
Dante: You gypsies should go back where you belong, uh. You have no place in the world of the opera. You understand me? I talk to you.
Suzie: His name is Cesar.
Dante: Allora, allora, she speaks, la brunetta, huh. But she speaks to them, but not to me.
Suzie: Perhaps I do. And why not?
Dante: They are dirty.
Suzie: How would you be if you lived on the road?
Dante: Ah, well, but I don't, uh. I live in an apartment, eh, with two bathrooms and beautiful furniture which I pay for with money I have earned. Why do they live like that? Because they are dirty, lazy thieves. Because they don't want to work, to make something of themselves.
Suzie: They live on the road because their homes were taken away. The have nowhere else to go.
Dante: (To Lola) Allora, Lola. Your little friend has become a gypsy lover.
[Later. Theater. Casar and Suzie talk.]
Casar: I don't need you to fight for me. I don't need any woman to fight for me.
Suzie: I was fighting for myself.
Casar: And you say I am dirty. You, who are one of them, the gadges... to the unclean.
Suzie: No, no. I said.... Why are you accusing me? I'm not one of them.
Casar: Then what are you?
（訳）
[屋内。日中。ロシア出身のローラが、始めてスージーのひと間しかないパリのアパートを訪ねる]
Lola: じゃあ、一人暮らしをしてるの、かわいそうに。あら、ここ、悪くないわね。結構広いじゃない。 モスクワだったら、こういうところに3世帯が住んでるわ。
(スージーは棚の上のビンの中に金を入れる)
Lola: 何してるの?
Suzie: 貯金。
Lola: 何のために?
Suzie: アメリカに行くためよ。
Lola: スージー、私のアドバイスを聞きなさい。素敵なドレスを買って、あなたをアメリカに連れて行っ てくれる金持ちの男を見つけるの。いいわね?
[屋内。スージーのアパート。夜。スージーがローラに写真を見せる]
Suzie: これが父よ。
Lola: これがあなたのお父さんなの。(写真に書いてあるものを読む)アブラモヴィッチ。これは、ロシア 語ね。どうして前に言わなかったの
(ローラはスージーに話しかける)
Lola: スージー?ロシア語がわからないの?
(スージーは「わからない」と頭を横に振る)
Lola: アブラマヴィッチ。ああ、、、じゃあ、、、お父さんはユダヤ人だったのね。
[屋内。劇場。夜。イタリア人の主役オペラ歌手のダンテが、オペラに主演しているジプシー役者の一人、 チェーザーに話しかける]
Dante: お前らジプシーは、自分たちにふさわしい場所に引っ込んでろ。オペラの世界にお前らの 居場所はないぞ。わかったか?お前に言ってるんだ。
Suzie: 名前はチェーザーよ。
Dante: おや、おや、話したぞ、ブルネット娘が。しかし、こいつらには話しかけて、俺には話しかけない。
Suzie: たぶんね。それがいけない?
Dante: こいつらは汚い?
Suzie: 外で暮らしていれば、仕方ないわ。
Dante: ああ、そうかね。しかし、俺は違う。俺はアパートに住んでいる。浴室がふたつと、俺が 自分で稼いだ金を払って買った美しい家具がある。なぜこいつらはああいう暮らしをしてる?なぜなら、 汚くて怠け者の泥棒だからさ。働いて、一旗あげようって気がない。
Suzie: 外で暮らしているのは、家を奪われたからよ。他に行くところがないからだわ。
Dante: (ローラに) やれやれ、ローラ。きみの小さな友人はジプシー好きになってしまったな。
[その後。劇場。チェーザーとスージーが話す。]
Casar: 俺のために戦う必要はない。女の代わりに闘ってもらう必要はない。
Suzie: 自分のために闘っていたのよ。
Casar: それで俺が汚いって?君は、あいつらの仲間だな。ジプシーでなく、、、不潔なやつらだ。
Suzie: いえ、違うわ。あたしが言ってのは、、、。どうしてあたしを責めるの?あたしは彼らの 仲間じゃないわ
Casar: じゃあ、君は何者だ?
