STORY：1914年、ワシントンD.C。地図製作者で言語学者でもある若者、マイロサッチは、亡き祖父の遺志を継ぎ、 古代に海中に沈んで失われた帝国アトランティスの発見を夢見て研究を続けている。ある日マイロは、祖父の友人 だったという大富豪の家に呼ばれ、アトランティスの謎を解くカギとなる古文書を渡され、アトランティス発見の ための探検隊に参加するよう要請される。曲者ぞろいの探検隊一行は潜水艦に乗り込み、やがてアトランティスを発見。 そこでプリンセスキーダに会うが、、、。

[Atlantis. Milo talks with Kida, an Atlantean princess he has met upon arriving at Atlantis.]
Kida: I have some questions and you won't leave until they are answered.
Milo: Yeah, well, I... Okey.
Kida: (Learning Milo into he woods) Come. There is so much to ask about your world. You are a scholar, yes? Judging by your diminished physique and large forehead, you are suited dor nothing else. Where are you from? When did the floods recede?
Milo: Hey, I got questions for you, too. Let's do this. You ask one, then I'll ask one, then you, then me.
Kida: Very well. What is your first question?
Milo: How did you get here? Not you personally, but your culture. How did all this end up down here?
Kida: It is said the gods became jealous of Atlantis. They sent a great cataclysm and banished us here. All I can remember is the sky going dark and people shouting and running. Then a bright light, like a star, floating above the city. My father said it called my mother to it. I never saw her again.
Milo: I'm sorry. If it's any consolation, I know how you feel because I lost... Wait a minute. Back up! Are you telling me that you remember because you were there? That's impossible. That would make you eighty-five, eighty-eight hundred years old.
Kida: Yes.
Milo: Oh, well, hey. Looking good. Uh... Got a question for me?
Kida: Yes. How did you find your way to this place.
Milo: It wasn't easy. (Holding up the Shepherd's Journal) Without this book, we never would have made it. Second question. Legend has it your people possess a power source...
(Kida grabs the journal and pages through it).
Kida: You can understand this?
Milo: Yes, I'm a linguist. Now, getting back to my question...
Kida: (Pointing to a passage) This right here, you can read it?
Milo: Yes I read Atlantean, just like you. (Staring at Kida) You can't, can you?
Kida: No one can.Such knowledge was lost after the Meh-behlmoak.
Milo: Oh, the Great Flood.
[A little later. Milo and Kida are climbing a cliff.]
Milo: By the way, we were never properly introduced. I'm Milo.
Kida: My name is Kidagakash.
Milo: Ki-, Ki-, Kindamaschnaga. Uh... you got a nickname?
Kida: Kida.
Milo: Kida. I can remember that.
(Kida brings Milo to the top of a carved statue that is the highest point in Atlantis. They look out over the city.)
Milo: Wow!
(Milo wipes his eyes.)
Kida: What is wrong.
Milo: Oh, nothing. I just got something in my eye. My grandpa told me stories about this place my entire life. I wish he was standing here now.

[アトランティス。マイロが、アトランティスに到着してすぐに出会った王女キーダと話す。]
Kida: あなたにいくつか質問があるの。それに答えてくれるまで、行っちゃだめよ。
Milo: ああ、その、ぼくも、、、。いいよ。
Kida: (マイロを森の中に案内して)こっちよ。あなたの住んでいる世界について聞きたいことが山ほどあるの。 あなた、学者でしょ？小柄な体つきと大きな額から判断して、それ以外にふさわしいものはないもの。どこからきたの？ 洪水はいつ引いたの？
Milo: ねえ、ぼくもきみにいろいろ質問がある。こうしよう。きみがひとつ質問したら、ぼくもひとつ質問する。そしてきみ、 そして僕の番だ。
Kida: いいわ。あなたの最初の質問はなに？
Milo: どうやってここにきたの？きみ個人のことじゃなくて、きみたちの文明のことだけど。どうして全てが海の中 に沈んでしまったの？
Kida: 神々がアトランティスに嫉妬したといわれているわ。彼らが大洪水を起こして、私たちをここに追放したって。 私が覚えているのは、空が暗くなって、みんなが叫びながら走っていることだけよ。その後、、星のように明るい光が町の上に 浮かんでいた。その光が母を呼び寄せたと父は言っていたわ。それ以来二度とは母に会うことはなかったわ。
Milo: お気の毒に。いくらかでも慰めになるのなら、君はどんな思いか、ぼくにはわかる。ほくも亡くしたから、、、。 ちょっと待って！話を戻して！君はその場にいたから覚えているといってるのかい？そんなのありえないよ。だったらきみは、八千年後、、、 8800歳ってことになる。
Kida: ええ。
Milo: わぁ、そんな、ねぇ。素敵に見えるよ。あの、、、。ぼくに質問はない？
Kida: あるわ。どうやってこの場所に来る道を見つけたの？
Milo: 簡単じゃなかった。(「羊飼いの日誌」)を掲げて）この本がなかったら、絶対にたどり着けなかったよ。 二番目の質問。伝説では、きみたちは力の源を持っているといわれているけど、、、。
(キーダは日誌を掴み取るとページをめくる。).
Kida: あなた、これが理解できるの？
Milo: ああ。ぼくは言語学者だ。さぁ。ぼくの質問にもどると、、、。
Kida: (ある一節を指差して) ちょうどここ、あなた読める？
Milo: ああ。アトランティス語は読めるよ。きみみたいにね。(キーダを見つめて)きみ、読めないの？
Kida: 読める人なんかはいないわ。そういう知識は、メーベールモークの後で失われたの。
Milo: ああ、大洪水のことだね。
[少し後、マイロとキーダはがけを上っている。]
Milo: ところで、きちんと自己紹介していなかったね。ぼくはマイロだ。
Kida: わたしの名前は、キーダガカシュ。
Milo: キー、キー、キーダマシュナガ。あの、、ニックネームない？
Kida: キーダよ。
Milo: キーダ。それなら覚えられる。
(キーダはマイロを、アトランティスで一番高い場所である彫刻のてっぺんにつれてくる。二人は町を見渡す。)
Milo: すごい。
(マイロは目をぬぐう)
Kida: どうしたの？
Milo: ああ、別に。何かが目に入ってだけさ。生まれてからずっと、この場所のことを祖父に聞いていたんだ。 祖父も今ここに立っていたらいいのにな。（次回はThe MAN WHO CRIED）
