2001.11.1 第5回Movie:O Brother, Where Art Thou?
STORY：1930年代。アメリカ南部。口が達者な伊達男のエヴァレット、いつも文句をいっているピート、 ちょっとトロイデルマーの3人の囚人が脱獄する。目指すは、エヴァレットが昔、強盗をして隠しておいた 120万ドル。しかし、3人が最初に出会った予言者の予言どおり、彼らの旅は苦難に満ち、予想外の展開となる、、、。

[Ext. Railroad tracks. Day. Evarett, Pete and Delmar are escaping from a prison.]
Everett: Well, all ight, we take off through that bayou...
Pete: Wait a minute! Who elected you leader of his outfit!?
Everett: Well, Pete, I figure it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought. But if that ain't the consensus view, then hell... let's put it to a vote!
Pete: Suits me! I'm votin' for yours truly!
Everett: Well, I'm voting for yours truly, too!
Delmar: Okay, I'm with you fellas.
(They see a mechanically powered railcar approaching. Evarett speaks to the man on the railcar, who turns out to be seer.)
Everett: Mind if we join you old timer?
Seer: Join me, my sons, join me!
Delmar: You work for the railroad, grandpa?
Seer: I work for no man.
Pete: You got a name, do you?
Seer: I have no name.
Everett: Well, that right there may be the reason you had difficulty finding gainful employment. Ya see. in the mart of competitive commerce the ...
Seer: You seek a great fortune, you three who are now in chains. You will find a fortune. Though it will not be the fortune you seek. But first... First you must travel a long and difficult road. A road fraught with peril. You shall see things wonderful to tell. You shall see a cow on the roof shall be. But fear not the obstacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward. Though the road may wind, and yea your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow the way. Even unto your salvation.
[Int. Forest. Day. Having visited a store in town, Everett joins Pete and Delmar, who are sitting on the ground.]
Everett: Well, it didn't look like a one horse town, but try finding a decent hair jelly.
Delmar: Gopher, Everett?
Everett: And no transmission belt for two weeks, neither.
Pete: Huh? They dam that river on the 21st, today's the 17th!
Everett: Don't I know it?
Pete: We got but four days to get to that treasure. After that, it will be at the bottom of a lake! We ain't gonna make it walkin'.
Everett: That's right.
Delmar: Gopher, Everett?
Everett: But the old tactician's got a plan. For the transportation, that is. I don't know how I'm going to keep my coiffure in order.
(Everett tosses a gold pocket watch to Pete.)
Pete: How is this a plan? How we gonna get a car?
Everett: Sell that. I figure it could only have painful associations for Wash.
Pete: (Reading) "To Washington Bartholomew Hogwallop. From his loving Cora. Amor fidelis."
Everett: It was in his bureau. I reckon it will fetch us enough cash for good used auto-voiture, and a little left over besides.
Delmar: Woo, you got some light fingers there, Everett, Gopher?
Pete: You miserable little sneak! You stole from my kin!
Everett: Who was fixing to betray us.
Pete: You didn't know that at the time!
Everett: So I borrowed it, 'till I did know.
Pete: That don't make sense!
Everett: Pete, It's a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.
（訳）
[屋外。鉄道道路。日中。エヴァレット、ピート、デルマーが刑務所から逃走中。]
Everett: ようし、あのバイユーを通って逃げよう、、、。
Pete: ちょっと待てよ!誰がこの一行のリーダにお前を選んだんだ!?
Everett: あのな、ピート、抽象的思考のできるものがなるべきだと思うがね。しかし、それが一致 した意見じゃないなら、くそ、、、投票で決めよう!
Pete: いいさ!俺は自分に入れるぜ!
Everett: そうか、俺も自分に入れるぞ!
Delmar: よし、俺はお前らに従うよ。
(手動トロッコが近づいてくるのが見える。エヴァレットがトロッコに乗っている男に話しかける。男 は予言者だと分かる)
Everett: 俺たちを乗せてくれるかな?ジイさん。
Seer: 乗りな、若いの。乗りな!
Delmar: 鉄道会社で働いているのか、ジイちゃん?
Seer: 誰のもとでも働いてねぇ。
Pete: 名前あるんだろ?
Seer: 名前なんてねえ。
Everett: なるほど。給料をもらえる仕事がなかなか見つからなかったのは、それが理由かもしれ ないな。ほら、競争の激しい商業市場じゃ、、、。
Seer: お前らは大きな宝を探しとる。今、鎖につながれとるお前ら3人は。お前らは宝を見つける だろう。だが、それはお前らの探してる宝じゃない。しかし、まず、、、最初に、お前らは長くて険しい道 を進まなければならん。危険がいっぱいの道だ。おまえらは語るべき素晴らしい物を見るだろう。綿花小屋 の屋根の上に牛がいるのを見るだろう。ああ、びっくりするようなものを数多くな。この道が出れほど長い かは、おれには何も言えん。だが、その途上にある障害を忘れてはならぬ。なぜなら、運命がお前らに 報いを与えているからだ。その道は曲がりくねっているからかもしれんし、そう、おまえらの心はなえるかもしれんが、 それでもその道をたどることだ。お前らが救済さえもされるまで。
[屋内。森。日中。町の店を訪れた後、エヴァレットがピートとデルマーに加わる。後者ふたりは地面に座っている。]
Everett: さてと、ド田舎の街には見えなかったが、まともなポマードを探そうとしてみな。
Delmar: 地リス、食うか?エヴァレット?
Everett: おまけに、トランスミッションベルトも二週間かかる。
Pete: ええっ?あの川にダムを作るのは21日で、今日は17日だぞ!
Everett: 俺が知らないとでも言うのか?
Pete: 宝にたどり着くまで4日しかない。それが過ぎたら、湖の底に沈んでしまう!歩いていったら間に合わないぞ!
Everett: その通り。
Delmar: 地リス食うか、エヴァレット?
Everett: しかし、老練な策士には計画があるのさ。つまり、交通手段のな。どうやって髪を整えておいたらいいの か、わからないよ。
(エヴァレットはピートに金の懐中時計を投げる。)
Pete: どうしてこれが計画なんだ?どうやって車を手に入れる?
Everett: そいつを売るんだ。ワシュのやつに痛ましいことを思い起こさせるだけだからな。
Pete: (懐中時計の裏の文字を読む) "ワシントン・バーソロミュー・ホグワロップへ。愛するコーラより。忠実な愛を誓う。"
Everett: やつのタンスの中にあったんだよ。まともな中古車を買って、お前に少し残しておけるだけの現金が手にはいると思ってな。
Delmar: へえ、お前手が早いな。エヴァレット。地リス食うか?
Pete: このあさましいこそ泥め!俺の親戚から盗みやがって!
Everett: やつは俺たちを裏切ろうとしていたじゃないか。
Pete: あの時はそのことを知らなかったじゃないか!
Everett: だから借りたのさ、それを知るまでな。
Pete: 理屈に合わん!
Everett: ピート、人間の心の中に論理を探すのは愚か者のやることだぞ。（次回はglitter）
