STORY：14世紀、ヨーロッパ。英国出身の若者、ウィリアムは、主人として仕えるエクター卿が馬上槍 試合を前に急死したため、主人になりすまして出場して優勝する。勝利の味を占めた彼は、次の大会にも出 場しようと仲間のワットとローランドに持ちかける。馬上槍試合には、貴族でないと出場できない決まり で、身分を偽って出場したことがわかると死刑になる。それでも、騎士になって自分の運命を変えたいと願 うウィリアムは、大会に出場し、勝利を重ねるが、、、。

[Ext.Road.Day.Supported by Roland and Wat, William has won a jousting match on behalf of his dead master, Sir Ector. Roland divides the money earned through the match.]
Rolland: That's five for William. Five for Wat. Five for Rollan, who's going home to England
Wat: Straight to the pub for me. Eal pie, brie tart, tansy cakes with peppermint cream.
William: We could do this.
Roland: We've done it , boy. That's silver in your hand.
William: No, I mean, we can do this. We can be champions. Give us your coins. Give me your coins.
(William collects the coins from Roland and Wat, who look confused. William then gives one coin each to the two men.)
William: (To Roland) Now, that's one for you. (to Wat) And one ... for you. Which leaves 13. That's 13 for training and outfiting. The tournament in Rouen is in a month. We could split a bigger prize. In one month, we'd be on our way to glory and riches.
Roland: Or lying in a ditch with Sir Ector. William, I just want to go home.
Wat: Tansy cakes. Dilled veal balls. I'll take my five now.
(William turns and starts walking down the road. Wat and Roland chase after him.)
Wat: Oh, wait up. You're going the wrong way!
Roland: You can't even joust.
William: Most of it is the guts to take blow. Guts I have. And technique... I have a month to learn that. and name a man better with a sword than I am.
Wat: In the practice ring.
Roland: You're not of noble birth.
William: So, we lie. How did the nobles become noble in the first place? They took it at the tip of a sword. I'll do it with a lance.
Wat: A blunted lance.
William: No matter, Wat. A man can change his stars. I won't spend the rest of my life as nothing.
Roland: (Pointing to a corpse hanging from a gallows nearby) That is nothing. And that's where glory will take us.
Wat: We're peasants. Glory and riches are beyond our grasp. But a full stomach? That dream can come true.
William: (Holding the coins tightly in his fists) If you can take your coins, go eat cake in England. But if you can't you come with me.
(Wat and Roland react incredulously.)
William: You see? Money doesn't matter.
(Roland and Wat rush at William and wrestle him for the money. Wat bites William on the hand. William screams, and the men stop their struggle.)
Wat: See how hungry I am?! Do you?!
William: Damn your stomach, Wat! (Looking pleadingly at Roland) Roland, please. With 13 silver pieces, three men can change their stars.
(Roland thinks then smiles.)
Wat: God love you, William.
William: I know, I know. No one else will.
（訳）
[屋外。道。日中。ウィリアムはローランドとワットの支援を受け、亡き主人エクター卿の代わりに馬上槍 試合に出場して優勝。試合で稼いだお金をローロンドに分ける。]
Rolland: ウィリアムに5枚。ワットに5枚。ローランドに5枚。俺はイングランドに帰るよ。
Wat: 俺様はパブに直行だ。うなぎパイ、ブリー・タルト、ペパーミント・クリームを添えたヨモギギクのケーキ
William: 俺たち、これをやってけるぞ。
Roland: もうやったんだ、坊や。だから、お前の手の中に銀貨があるじゃないか。
William: いや、そうじゃなくて、俺たちにはやれる。チャンピョンになれる。お前らのコインをよこせ。 コインをよこすんだ。
（ウィリアムはローランドとワットからコインを集める。二人は当惑した表情。ウィリアムは二人に1枚ずつコインを渡す。）
William:（ローランドに）さあ、お前に1枚。（ワットに）それから1枚を、、、おまえに。これで13枚 残る。訓練と武具のための13枚だ。1ヵ月後にルーアンで競技会がある。もっとでかい賞金を山分けできるぞ。 1ヵ月後には栄光と富への道を歩んでいるさ。
Roland: それとも、エクター卿と一緒に溝の中に横たわっているか、だな。ウィリアム、俺は故郷に 帰りたいんだよ。
Wat: ヨモギクのケーキ。ディル風味の肉団子。俺は今すぐ、取り分の5枚をもらうぞ。
（ウィリアムは背を向けて、道を歩き始める。ワットとローランドが後を追う。）
Wat: おい、待てよ。進む方向が違う！
Roland: お前は馬上槍試合をできないじゃないか。
William: 必要なのは主に、一撃を受ける度胸だ。度胸なら俺にある。それから技術、、、習得するのに１ヶ月 ある。それから、俺より剣術のうまいやつの名前を挙げてみな。
Wat: 練習場の中ではな。
Roland: おまえは、貴族の生まれじゃない。
William: だったら、ウソをつくさ。それとも、貴族はどうして貴族になったんだ？剣の力でなったんだよ。 俺は槍でそれをやってみせる。
Wat: なまくらな槍でだろ。
William: どうだっていいさ。ワット、人は自分の運命を変えることができるんだ。俺は残りの人生をつまらぬ存在として送るつもりはない。
Roland: （近くの絞首台につるされている死体を指差して）ああいうのを、つまらぬ存在というんだ。 俺たちにとって、栄光の行き着く末はああいうザマだよ。
Wat: 俺たちは小作人だ。栄光と富は手の届かないものなんだよ。だけど、満腹はどうだ？その夢は かなえることができる。
William: （コインをこぶしでしっかりと握り）金を奪えるんなら、イングランドにケーキを食いに行け。奪 えないんなら、俺と一緒にくるんだ。
（ワットとローランドは疑っているような顔をする。）
William:ほらね。金の問題じゃない。
（ローランドとワットはウィリアムに掛けより、金を取り戻そうとつかみかかる。ワットがウィリアム の手に噛み付く。ウィリアムは悲鳴を上げ、男たちは取っ組み合いをやめる。
Wat: こんなに腹ペコなんだよ！わかったか？！
William: お前の腹なんで知ったことか、ワット！（哀願するようにローランドを見る）ローランド、頼む。 １３枚の銀貨で、３人の男の運命を変えられるんだ。
(ローランドは考えてから、微笑む)
Wat: 神の愛があるように、ウィリアム。
William: わかってる、わかってる。他の誰も愛してくれないしな。
